STUDENT SUPPORT SERVICES GUIDANCE The principal and teachers provide informal services for the parents and students. Our school also works very closely with our parish priests when need arises. If necessary, outside resources are utilized and/or recommended to the parents.
REMEDIAL READING: GRADES 1-3 Student evaluation for participation in the Remedial Reading program for primary grades 1-3 is based on: below level reading, teacher recommendations, and standardized test results. Remedial Reading group sessions of two to six students are held three times a week. One-on-one 30 minute classes are held once a week. The program emphasizes decoding words, word attack and comprehension skills/strategies through the use of Open Court Reteach components to reinforce skills already taught in the classroom. The use of technology enhances the Remedial Reading program.
REMEDIAL READING & MATH: GRADES 5-8 Students in grades 5-8 receive one 45 minute session once a week in a group setting ranging from 3 to 8 students. Students in these grades who have scored below proficiency on the NYS English Language Arts Test (ELA) are eligible for inclusion in the program. Remedial Reading students are re-taught reading strategies and learn to apply skills in order to achieve on-level or above-level on the NYS ELA Test. Strategies and lessons taught in remedial reading include:
In 2004 Leap Track Assessment and Instruction Systems were installed in both buildings. The use of this technology has enhanced our Remedial Reading for grades 2-5, as well as our Remedial Math program for grade 5. We can now: · Assess students continuously · Be subject specific · Generate reports · Prescribe individualized learning paths · Give focused, independent instructions Remedial Math in grades six, seven and eight is offered to students who score below-level on the Terra Nova Assessment test and need further remediation.
RESOURCE CENTER The Richard Cagnoni, Jr. Resource Center in Our Lady of Guadalupe School assists students from Pre-K to eighth grade. It is an educational setting that provides specialized supplementary instruction, either individually or in small groups, for children with mild handicaps, learning disabilities and/or behavioral problems. Special needs students work with a teacher on a regularly scheduled basis for a portion of the school day. Instructional groups are no larger than three students who are grouped according to academic, social and physical needs. The amount of time each child spends in the resource center depends on his/her specific needs. Each session lasts 30 minutes and children are not removed from their major subject classes. The Resource Center teacher collaborates with the classroom teachers in order to maintain or improve academic performance in problem areas. Traditional teaching methods are integrated with specialized technology and enhance education for these students. Software programs developed for special education by companies such as Riverdeep, JumpStart and Sports Marathon are integrated within the core curriculum in the resource room. All students who attend the Resource Center must be tested by either the NYC Board of Education or private agencies.
HEALTH The NYC Department of Health provides a full-time nurse. The room is equipped with a sink, scale, examination table, and various first-aid supplies. The nurse reviews health records in conjunction with the classroom teacher. Concerns are noted and referrals are sent to the parents to be followed up by their family doctor.
TRANSPORTATION On a yearly basis, if the number of students meets the criteria, the Bureau of Transportation will provide free bus service for students in grades K-6, as well as reduced fare passes. Crossing guards are positioned on the main corners to guide those students who walk to school. Our trained seventh and eighth grade Safety Patrol members assist the crossing guards in this process.
FIELD TRIPS The classroom teacher selects curriculum-related field trips.
EXTENSION PROGRAM The Extension Program is open to Our Lady of Guadalupe School students in Preschool to grade 6. There is a nominal fee for this program. It provides before and after school supervision for children of working parents. The AM Session is open from 7:30AM to 8:15AM, while the PM Session is open from 2:45PM to 6:00PM. The program provides children with indoor/outdoor recreation, homework supervision and assistance, movies, and snack in a relaxed and secure atmosphere. The personnel, who are members of the faculty and staff, work on a set schedule providing a normal routine for the children. The ratio of children to teacher is 10 to 1. On a usual day, eight teachers are on staff. In addition to the Extension personnel, seventh and eighth graders offer voluntary service to the program on a daily basis.
SPEECH Speech is provided by the Board of Education after school.

Grades K-3 have lunch from 11:15AM to 12:00PM and grades 4-8 have lunch from 11:45AM to 12:30PM. Lunch mothers and a faculty member carefully supervise children.
